Borrelia miyamotoi 

Borrelia miyamotoi is a relapsing fever spirochete that has only recently been identified as a human pathogen that cause tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF). It was discovered in 1994 in Ixodes persulcatus ticks in Japan and then in two species of North American ticks, Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus.

These ticks are already known to transmit several diseases, including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Human cases of B. miyamotoi infection were first reported in 2011 in Russia and subsequently in the United States, Europe and Asia.

In recently published research the most common clinical manifestations of B. miyamotoi infection are fever, chills, headache and other common symptoms including fatigue, myalgia, arthralgia and nauzea. Standard blood tests for Lyme disease are not helpful in the diagnosis of B. miyamotoi infections. Currently, confirmation of a diagnosis relies on the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests that detect DNA from the organism, antibody-based assays, in vitro cultivation and/or isolation by animal inoculation.

 

GeneProof Borrelia burgdorferi PCR Kit 

The GeneProof Borrelia burgdorferi PCR Kit is designed for detection of clinically important species causing Lyme disease from the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group. At the same time, this kit also detects Borrelia miyamotoi causing tick-borne relapsing fever which is not usually detected by other diagnostic kits.

Detection is based on the amplification of DNA sequence encoding 16S RNA specific for the B. burgdorferi sensu lato group and measuring the amplification product concentration using PCR process and fluorescence labelled probes. B. burgdorferi presence is indicated by FAM fluorophore fluorescence growth. An Internal Standard (IS) is included in the reaction mix, controlling the possible inhibition of the PCR reaction (ISIN version) and possibly also the DNA extraction process quality (ISEX version). IS positive amplification is detected in the HEX fluorophore fluorescence channel. The detection kit utilizes the "hot start" technology, minimizing non-specific reactions and assuring maximum sensitivity. Ready to Use MasterMix contains uracil-DNA-glycosylase (UDG), eliminating possible contamination of the PCR reaction by amplification products. The kit performs very sensitive B. burgdorferi detection in clinical material (EDTA whole blood, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, tick). The kit is designed for in vitro diagnostics and provides qualitative detection.
